Pay Day Book Haul (2)

05 July 0 Comments

Pay Day Book Haul (2) - June 2015

I'm still on a buying freeze, but I only picked up a couple books this month, so I'm actually pretty proud of myself. Instead of buying a whole lot of books, I've been reading a whole lot of books. It's a good system I have in place.

This month, I picked up...
Splendor (The Luxe #4) by Anna Godberson
  • With this I now have the complete set of books in my possession, so I think that is a good buy!
Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky #1) by Veronica Rossi
Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky #2) by Veronica Rossi
  • With these, I now have the complete series! Another good buy!

Third Sentence Thursday (5): June 11, 2015
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 1 by John Vornholt, Arthur Byron Cover, and Alice Henderson
I was supposed to have this one done last week for my #TBRTakedown, but I am still chugging away at it. School has been really busy and I am not getting as much reading done as I would like. Hopefully I can catch up on the weekend! Without further ado, here are three third sentences from the first volume in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer novels!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (5)

08 June 0 Comments
Since last Monday was the end of the month of May, I used Monday as my monthly wrap-up and since it was #TBRTakedown this week, I posted my list of what I would be reading during the week on the day before. Confusing, I know. Either way, here is a list of the books I read this past week, a whopping 10! I didn't finish all of the #TBRTakedown books, but I will get to them, I promise.
What I read this week...
A Murder of Mages: A Novel of the Maradaine Constabulary by Marshall Ryan Marseca. This is a mystery novel that involves magic and murder. Two of my favourite things! There is also a strong female lead, so I would suggest picking this one up!

Red Nights by Shari J. Ryan. This is another murder-mystery novel with a lot of twists and a really lovely love interest. There is a lot of symbolism in it and it is well written, keeping you on the edge of your seat.

Since You've Been Gone by Mary Jennifer Payne. Fifteen year old Edie and her mom have been on their run for years from Edie's abusive father. When the past catches up to them, Edie has to learn to survive on her own.

Shadows of Asphodel by Karen Kincy. A steampunk historical-fiction fantasy novel that follows Ardis and Wendel in their attempts to conquer evil.

Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy. The book that started the Netflix series about a small town in Pennsylvania, Hemlock Grove. After girls start turning up dead after the full moon, the town turns their attention to Peter Rumaneck, the resident Gypsy, for the murders.

A Curse of Ash and Iron by Christine Norris.
A steampunk Cinderella retelling that focuses on Ellie and the curse her step-mother has placed upon her and her father in order to get what she wants. How far is Ellie willing to go to break the curse?

Faking Perfect by Rebecca Phillips.
Lexi doesn't want to become her mother, so she surrounds herself with perfection in hopes that she can fake it long enough to survive. However, she finds herself slipping into her old ways and has to face the truth to become who she really is, not who she is pretending to be.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
A classic dystopian novel about the world in which books are illegal and burnt upon being found.

Fablehaven (Fablehaven #1) by Brandon Mull. When their parents go on a cruise, Seth and Kendra are sent to stay with their grandparents. Once they get there, they find out that their grandparents are the caretakers of the magical conservatory, Fablehaven.

Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between by Jennifer E. Smith. This review won't be posted until August since the release date for this novel is September 1st! However, I enjoyed it a lot. Like a lot, a lot.

What I plan to read this week...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 1 by Nancy Holder. In every generation, there is a Chosen One. A slayer destined to protect the human race. She alone must fight the demons of hell. She alone must risk her life to stop the spread of evil. Buffy is the Chosen One.

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer. Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison--even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life.

The Fire Children by Lauren M. Roy. An ARC from NetGalley that follows two children escape the darkness of their underground dwellings, to find adventure, magic and terrible danger await anyone who ventures above ground.

Fractured Dreams (The Dreamer Saga #1) by K.M. Randall. It’s been eight years since Story Sparks last had a dream. Now they’re back, tormenting her as nightmares she can’t remember upon waking. The black waters of Lake Sandeen, where her Uncle Peter disappeared decades before, may hold the secret to Story’s hidden memories, or a truth she’d rather not know.

What are you planning on reading this week? Sound off in the comments! Lots of love and happy reading! xx

Sharon's Spring Challenge Reading List!

05 June 0 Comments
Sharon's Spring Challenge (April 1 - June 30, 2015)

1. Spring Ahead! The phrase "Spring forward, Fall back" helps people remember how Daylight Saving Time affects their clocks. At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of Standard Time. Read a book about time travel.

I read Earth & Sky (Earth & Sky #1) by Megan Crewe on May 17th. This book features aliens and time travel!

2. Spring into action - to suddenly begin moving or doing something. Read a book where a character makes an impetuous decision.
The entire Escape From Furnace series by Alexander Gordon Smith falls into this category. I read most of them in this time period.

3. Spring, a mechanical device that stores energy. Read a steampunk book - Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes. Most steampunk books have mechanical devices in them.

I read two steampunk books! Shadows of Asphodel by Karen Kincy and A Curse of Ash and Iron by Christine Norris.

4. Spring Cleaning. Spring cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house in the springtime. The practice of spring cleaning is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter. The most common usage of spring cleaning refers to the yearly act of cleaning a house from top to bottom which would take place in the first warm days of the year typically in spring, hence the name. However it has also come to be synonymous with any kind of heavy duty cleaning or organizing enterprise. A person who gets their affairs in order before an audit or inspection could be said to be doing some spring cleaning. Read a book that has been on your TBR list the longest.

I don't know if it has been on there the longest, but it has been on there for almost two years, so I'm going to say that Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy is the one I read for this challenge.

5. Spring Break is a vacation period in early spring at universities and schools in various countries in the northern hemisphere. Read a book that takes place at a college or during spring break.

I read Parallel by Lauren Miller on May 1st. It takes place at a college and has some time travel so I chose for it to go under this category.

6. She’s/He’s no Spring Chicken. New England chicken farmers discovered that chickens born in the Spring bought better prices, rather than old birds that had gone through the winter etc. Sometimes farmers tried to sell the old birds as a new spring born chicken. Smart buyers often complained that a tough fowl was "no spring chicken" and so the term now is used to represent birds (and even people) past their plump and tender years. Read an old favorite or a book you have been putting off reading.

I had been putting off reading The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan but finally got around to it and am glad I did.

7. Spring to mind - to appear suddenly or immediately in your thoughts. Read a book that was released in 2015 or the newest book on your TBR list.

Surprisingly, I have read lots of books that were released in 2015. My favourite one was The Corridor (The Corridor #1) by A.N. Willis because it explores multi-universe theory.

8. Spring in his step If you walk with or have a spring in your step, you walk energetically in a way that shows you are feeling happy and confident. Read a book that has a character who exhibits these characteristics or an action genre book.

I read Powerless by Tera Lynn Childs and Tracy Deebs. Kenna may be a "ordinary" but she does everything in her power to save her mom and that is what a hero is to me.

Third Sentence Thursday (4): Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy

Third Sentence Thursday (4): June 4, 2015
Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy

This week's novel is one that I read yesterday for the #TBRTakedown Challenge as the "One Year or More on TBR" book! If you liked the TV show, I would suggest not reading this one unless you want to be like "well I read the book and watched the TV show". It was a bit challenging to get through so take that one with a grain of salt. I know you guys have read my review, and know I was disappointed. I wanted to have a "but" there but there is no but. I was disappointed.

Wishlist Wednesday (4): The Queen of Tearling

03 June 0 Comments

Wishlist Wednesday (4) - June 4, 2015

This week's wishlist Wednesday title is one that has been on my wishlist for about a year now since it came out last June. It is said to be a mix of Philippa Gregory (The Tudor Court author) and A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, so I was like eff yeah I want to read that. (But of course I have not gotten around to it yet). Check it out below!

The Queen of Tearling by Erika Johansen

Goodreads Synopsis
Her throne awaits . . . if she can live long enough to take it.

It was on her nineteenth birthday that the soldiers came for Kelsea Glynn. They’d come to escort her back to the place of her birth – and to ensure she survives long enough to be able to take possession of what is rightfully hers.

But like many nineteen-year-olds, Kelsea is unruly, has high principles and believes she knows better than her elders. Unlike many nineteen-year-olds, she is about to inherit a kingdom that is on its knees – corrupt, debauched and dangerous.

Kelsea will either become the most fearsome ruler the kingdom has ever known . . . or be dead within the week.

Combining thrilling adventure and action, dark magic, mystery and romance, The Queen of the Tearling is the debut of a born storyteller blessed with a startling imagination.

Wishlist Wednesday (3): Dragon Ball: The Complete Illustrations by Akira Toriyama

Wishlist Wednesday (3): - May 27 2015

Today's Wishlist Wednesday book is also one that has been on my wishlist for a while because I asked for it for my birthday this year so I am hoping I do get it. It is
the Complete Illustrations from the Dragon Ball manga by Akira Toriyama. If you don't know what Dragon Ball (or at least Dragon Ball Z) is, then you missed out on an integral part of a childhood and I highly suggest you take three days to binge watch the original series and the "Z" series, but definitely skip the "GT" series.

Fictitious Friday (3) - May 22, 2015
Fiction Spotlight of the Week: Favourite Fictional House

My favourite fictional house is most definitely the New York Shadowhunter's Institute from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. This house is where the New York Shadowhunters make their base camp and are able to research anything and everything related to the downworlders that they are hunting.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? (2) - May 18, 2015

Hello and happy Holiday Monday if you are reading here in Canada! I am going to wrap up what I read last week and what I plan on reading this week! Hopefully some of these are ones you either already want to check out or are on the fence about and I can help sway you in one way or the other!

This past week I read 6 books. I only got around to reading one of the books I planned on reading last week, Omni, but I did read a lot of others!
