Summary:
From the bestselling author of Empire of Wild, a wickedly subversive, deliciously imaginative, deeply feminist novel of contemporary witches on the rise—a book that only the supremely gifted storyteller Cherie Dimaline could write.

Lucky St. James, orphaned daughter of a bad-ass Métis good-times girl, is barely hanging on to her nowhere life when she finds out that she and her grandmother, Stella, are about to be evicted from their apartment. Bad to worse in a heartbeat. Then one night, doing laundry in the building's dank basement, Lucky feels an irresistible something calling to her. Crawling through a hidden hole in the wall, she finds a tarnished silver spoon depicting a story-book hag over letters that spell out S-A-L-E-M.

Which alerts Salem-born Meena Good, finder of a matching spoon, to Lucky's existence. One of the most powerful witches in North America, Meena has been called to bring together seven special witches and seven special spoons—infused with magic and scattered to the four directions more than a century ago—to form a magic circle that will restore women to their rightful power. Under the wing of the international headhunting firm VenCo, devoted to placing exceptional women in roles where they can influence business, politics and the arts, Meena has spent years searching out witches hiding in plain sight wherever women gather: suburban book clubs, Mommy & Me groups, temp agencies. Lucky and her spoon are number six.

With only one more spoon to find, a very powerful adversary has Meena's coven in his sights—Jay Christos, a roguish and deadly witch-hunter as old as witchcraft itself. As the clock ticks toward a now-or-never deadline, Meena sends Lucky and her grandmother on a dangerous, sometimes hilarious, road trip through the United States in search of the seventh spoon. The trail leads them at last to the darkly magical city of New Orleans, where Lucky's final showdown with Jay Christos will determine whether the coven will be completed, ushering in a new beginning, or whether witches will be forced to remain forever underground.

I knew from the first minute that VenCo would be special, but I didn’t realize just how deeply it would root itself in my heart. Cherie Dimaline has crafted a gorgeously gritty modern witch story infused with love — not just romantic love, but familial love, community love, and the kind of fierce tenderness that binds generations of women together. It’s rich with magic, grounded in Métis identity, and driven by characters who feel both powerful and profoundly human.

This was everything I want in a story: witches with purpose, found families that feel like home, and a plot that lets women reclaim what was always theirs. I loved every minute of it.

At the heart of VenCo is Lucky St. James — a Métis millennial trying to keep her life afloat — and her fiercely loving, wonderfully sharp grandmother Stella. Their relationship is the soul of the novel. Stella isn't just comic relief or a background presence — she’s a full, vibrant character with her own arc and grit. Their intergenerational love feels real, complex, and absolutely radiant on the page.

I cried, I laughed, I wanted to call my own grandmother. Their bond is the kind that carries you through hard things and reminds you why we fight for better.

As Lucky is drawn into a hidden world of witches and prophecy, she finds herself swept into a quest to reunite the long-lost VenCo coven. What unfolds is part road trip, part mystery, part reclamation. The witches she meets along the way — each distinct, each deeply rooted in different communities and cultures — represent the spectrum of what womanhood, power, and resistance can look like.

The found family that emerges is glorious. These women are fierce and flawed, full of laughter, rage, and healing. They bicker, they protect, they choose one another — and I would follow them anywhere.

What makes VenCo truly shine is how deeply it’s grounded in Métis culture and storytelling. Dimaline weaves it into the very bones of the book. From Lucky’s worldview to the cultural references and the spiritual texture of the magic, everything feels intentional, layered, and full of her culture.

This isn’t a story that flattens identity into metaphor. It’s proud, rooted, and joyful — a reclamation of space in a genre that often erases Indigenous presence.

The witchcraft in VenCo isn’t about flash or spectacle. It’s quiet and powerful, grounded in knowledge, lineage, and resistance. Dimaline uses witchcraft as a metaphor for community strength, cultural survival, and the inheritance of power. And in doing so, she gives us a story that feels both deeply ancient and fiercely modern.

You don’t need to be a witch to understand what it means to carry the strength of the women before you — and VenCo reminds us how precious and dangerous that strength truly is.

VenCo is a love letter to women, witches, aunties, grandmothers, and every person who’s ever felt like the world didn’t have a place for their kind of magic. It’s about carving that space anyway. And filling it with love.

If you’re looking for a witchy, empowering, beautifully written read with Indigenous magic and a warm, unbreakable heart — VenCo is the book for you.

Summary:
Fake dating gets a magical twist in this enchanting queer romantic comedy where a witch worries that the real feelings brewing between her and her crush were sparked by an accidental love potion, and the only way out of the disastrous spell is a healthy dose of the truth--drink up, witches.

Potion maker and self-proclaimed "messy witch" Morgan Greenwood is sure she was hexed at birth. Not only did she drunkenly offer to fake date the woman of her dreams during the biennial New England Witches' festival, but Rory Sandler, spellcasting champion and brilliant elemental witch--for reasons known only to the Goddess--accepted. It's like every good luck spell Morgan ever cast came through at once, and it doesn't take a crystal ball to predict this charade will end with a broken heart.

Or is the magic between them real? As Morgan and Rory prepare to fool everyone at the festival, their relationship starts to feel a whole lot less fake--right until Morgan realizes she might have screwed up the common relaxation potion she made for Rory and given her a love potion instead, breaking one of the most sacred Witch Council Laws.

To fulfill her promise to Rory, Morgan must somehow keep playing pretend while under the watchful eyes of Rory's family and legion of fans. But to break the love potion, she'll also have to prove how incompatible she and Rory really are. For a screwup like her, ruining their relationship should be easy--except every day, Morgan is becoming more bewitched by Rory herself.

The Importance of Rescuing

The bond I formed with my own rescue dog, Ruby, inspired me to write RUFF Riders and share the incredible journey she took from being born to an uncertain future, to her furever home, with my family. Through this book, I hope to raise awareness for the urgent need for fostering, adopting a rescue and community support in the world of animal rescue.

The heartwarming tale of RUFF Riders is inspired by Ruby, my beloved dog, whose true rescue story touched her deeply. Ruby was born in a shed hidden within the woods of Angier, North Carolina, and was subsequently adopted through Rescue Ur Furever Friend, an animal rescue organization. Throughout the adoption process, I encountered startling facts about the plight of shelter animals, leading her to embark on a mission to raise awareness and rally support for the desperate need for responsible adoptions, donations, and most importantly, fostering of rescued puppies and dogs.

Statistics reveal the urgent nature of this cause: every year, six million dogs and cats enter animal shelters or rescues, with at least one million euthanized due to insufficient funding and space in under-resourced shelters. I believe that educating the public about the distinction between animal shelters and rescues, as well as inspiring individuals to volunteer as foster caretakers, can significantly transform the lives of these innocent animals. Fostering not only provides temporary homes but also offers families the opportunity to assess their readiness for permanent pet ownership.

RUFF Riders delivers a powerful message, encouraging readers to FOSTER, ADOPT A RESCUE, AND/OR DONATE to their local animal rescues. The novel follows eleven-year-old Olivia Thomas, who dreams of having a dog but faces hesitant parents who question her level of responsibility. When she learns about an abandoned dog and her puppies delivered in a nearby forest, Olivia, along with her friend April and tech-savvy companion, Quinn, initiates a rescue operation that ultimately involves the press and her community. Teaming up with Rescue Ur Furever Friend, a local volunteer animal rescue group, they embark on a challenging journey that requires unwavering determination and community support.

Accompanied by a menu of community service options that appear as plot points in the story, and detailed on my website, book club questions printed at the back of the book are designed to get families to think about what strengths they can use to engage in meaningful activities related to animal rescue. I aim to inspire multi-generation book clubs for parents, grandparents and kids 8+.

Through empathy, teamwork, and responsibility, RUFF Riders encourages readers to recognize that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater cause of saving animal’s lives. A portion of the proceeds from RUFF Riders will be donated to Rescue Ur Forever Friend (NC RUFF) in Garner, North Carolina, a remarkable organization dedicated to rescuing and finding forever homes for countless animals in need.

I invite readers to join me in supporting NC RUFF by visiting their website, www.ncruff.org and exploring avenues of contribution, including fostering, adopting a rescue, and making monetary or in-kind donations.

Summary:
Sailor Moon meets Cinder in Guardians of Dawn: Zhara, the start of a new, richly imagined fantasy series from S. Jae-Jones, the New York Times bestselling author of Wintersong.

Magic flickers.
Love flames.
Chaos reigns.

Magic is forbidden throughout the Morning Realms. Magicians are called abomination, and blamed for the plague of monsters that razed the land twenty years before.

Jin Zhara already had enough to worry about—appease her stepmother’s cruel whims, looking after her blind younger sister, and keeping her own magical gifts under control—without having to deal with rumors of monsters re-emerging in the marsh. But when a chance encounter with an easily flustered young man named Han brings her into contact with a secret magical liberation organization called the Guardians of Dawn, Zhara realizes there may be more to these rumors than she thought. A mysterious plague is corrupting the magicians of Zanhei and transforming them into monsters, and the Guardians of Dawn believe a demon is responsible.

In order to restore harmony and bring peace to the world, Zhara must discover the elemental warrior within, lest the balance between order and chaos is lost forever.

If I could give this 10/5 stars, I would. If I could give this 100 stars, I would. I am so gloriously happy about this book!! A mixture of Cinder and Sailor Moon was a book I couldn't pass up. I thought this had an accurate portrayal of teenagers, a lot of good exploration of how neglect affects you, and inclusion that felt natural rather than forced.

I thought there were a lot of good threads between the storyline, the characters, and the magical girl transformations. This had every element that I wanted from a Sailor Moon/magical transformation girl-esque story. It also had a prince in disguise, funny quips, and the ability to showcase how people work together in a time of crisis.

I don't think this book will be for everyone. I don't think Sailor Moon is for everyone. There is a lot of lore and overlap in Guardians of Dawn: Zhara and the main protagonists (both Zhara and Han) can be frustrating at times. (At least Han is a bit better than Tuxedo Mask).

I liked the way that things were explained, that inclusion was incorporated, and that everyone was able to incorporate the language they needed to make people feel comfortable. While there was obviously some pushback in society around different sexualities and gender identities, that wasn't the crux of the issue at hand.

I loved the found family aspect, the mentorship, and the transforming animals that the Guardians had relationships with. I thought the romance was believable and sweet. I appreciated the struggles that Zhara had with accepting that her stepmother didn't love her and that she had been abused. I was shocked at some of the twists in the story and how everything connected.

I did have a bit of an issue with the magical sweeping of everything being great after the last battle (new people in power, changes in legislation basically overnight, etc.). But by that point I was so into the story and sad it was coming to a close that it was fine.

I can't wait to see where this story goes and meeting the other Guardians!!

Summary:
Inspired by Moulin Rouge! and set on an island in a magical version of Prohibition-era New York, Revelle is a breathtaking YA stand-alone fantasy full of dazzling magic, romance, and mystery from debut author Lyssa Mia Smith.

On the island of Charmant, magic flows like bootlegged champagne, and fantasies can be bought for the price of a gemstone.

Luxe Revelle, star of her family’s fantastical show, knows the splendor is just an illusion. With Prohibition threatening their livelihood, her family struggles to make a living, watering down champagne and patching holes in their sequined costumes. So when the son of Charmant’s wealthiest family makes her an offer—everything the Revelles need to stay in business, in exchange for posing as his girl and helping him become mayor—she can’t refuse.

The moment Jamison Port sets foot in Charmant, he can’t shake the feeling of familiarity. An orphan with as few memories as gemstones, he’s desperate to learn what happened to his parents. But as he delves into the island’s secrets, he risks angering the wrong person and discovering a truth that just might break his heart.

When Luxe and Jamison accidentally meet, the sparks that fly are more than her magical enchantments. But keeping secrets from powerful people is a dangerous game . . . one that could destroy them both.

While this gave me a mixture of Caraval and Moulin Rouge vibes, I really enjoyed this novel! I loved the magical depictions, the setting, and the lushness of the world that Smith created. I connected with the characters immediately and loved the shenanigans, magic aspect, and the way that it resolved.

I loved the mystery element that highlighted the behind the scenes and the charm of learning about different elements as the story went on. I thought it was so well done and kept me guessing the whole time.

I laughed, I cried, I gasped. I genuinely had a good time reading this book!! And the cover is gorgeous on top of that.

In my opinion, this is what I wanted Caraval to be - a magical world with characters I could actually stand to be around and stakes high enough that made sense to me.

Imogen Scott may be hopelessly heterosexual, but she’s got the World’s Greatest Ally title locked down.

She's never missed a Pride Alliance meeting. She knows more about queer media discourse than her very queer little sister. She even has two queer best friends. There's Gretchen, a fellow high school senior, who helps keep Imogen's biases in check. And then there's Lili—newly out and newly thriving with a cool new squad of queer college friends.

Imogen's thrilled for Lili. Any ally would be. And now that she's finally visiting Lili on campus, she's bringing her ally A game. Any support Lili needs, Imogen's all in.

Even if that means bending the truth, just a little.

Like when Lili drops a tiny queer bombshell: she's told all her college friends that Imogen and Lili used to date. And none of them know that Imogen is a raging hetero—not even Lili’s best friend, Tessa.

Of course, the more time Imogen spends with chaotic, freckle-faced Tessa, the more she starts to wonder if her truth was ever all that straight to begin with. . .
