Summary:
Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family—and from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitating toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

When Dimple Met Rishi covers these differences through the characters of Dimple and Rishi, who are polar opposites with what they want to achieve in life. Dimple is set out to be a coder, changing lives with her intelligence and drive to pursue the better. This goes against her mother's wishes for her to marry a good man and become a housewife.

Rishi on the other hand, has a gift for artwork and drawing comics. Ever the dutiful son, he lets his parents dictate what he should do in life, from going along with the arranged marriage to studying Engineering.

I loved how Rishi embraced his cultural identity, finding every opportunity to educate others about his identity. While this was something Dimple shied away upon, it was nice seeing his quiet confidence and how he didn't care about people's opinions - at least those that didn't matter.

The book also explores first love, but having a goal in life beyond just finding your future husband. As someone who isn't afraid to pursue her talents and who is driven to succeed, I related a lot to Dimple's mindset. Especially when it came to getting into a relationship that would only hold her back.

I absolutely loved this book so much. The family dynamics, the relationship, and the cuteness and squealing I did throughout reading it. I was smiling the entire time I was reading this.

I do wish there had been a bit more of the actual coding and programming (and less on the talent show, which seemed like a weird addition to the story) but it was such a great story.

Have you read this book? Are you going to pick this up?

Science Fiction and Fantasy Fridays: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells

28 October 0 Comments

Science Fiction and Fantasy Fridays introduces readers who are unfamiliar with the Adult SF/F genre to books, authors, and discussions all about the vast expanse of the world of Adult SF/F!

ALL SYSTEMS RED

Author: Martha Wells
Series: The Murderbot Diaries #1
Source: Audiobook via Audible
Publisher: Tor.com
Publication Date: May 2, 2017

Summary:
"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure."

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

Note: This is a review for the first three books in the series: ALL SYSTEMS RED, ARTIFICIAL CONDITION, and ROGUE PROTOCOL.

The books in the Murderbot diaries are more novella than novel, but they are starting off strong in the first three! In All Systems Red, we are introduced to our beloved protagonist, Murderbot, a sentient Security Unit. In this installment, it accompanies a group of scientists on an exploratory mission of an uninhabited planet.

It comes to their attention that another group of explorers are on the planet as well, so they try to contact them. Unable to reach the other group on comm channels, Murderbot and the scientists go to investigate.

I loved that these are told from the perspective of Murderbot. It is great to follow its thought processes at it navigated its complicated relationships with humans.

The Murderbot Diaries series is definitely not what I was expecting in terms of science fiction books. I think that I was going into this book expecting something serious; however, this book was definitely more on the light hearted side.

While there were some great plot points throughout the first three books, I became invested in the story because of the character development. I would love to be friends with Murderbot. They have a quirky sense of humor and I absolutely love the process that they go through in bonding with the crew. I haven't read a book in a while where I wanted to be friends with the main character.

There is also this great conversation about the definition of what it means to be human and also the treatment of creatures/beings that aren't the "normally" identified as having the same organic composition as humans. It's clear that Murderbot has inner thought that deal with this conversation. The manner in which he interacts with the other characters and how they interact with him is super important to the story as a whole. I felt myself getting all warm and fuzzy inside about some of the things I saw develop between them.

Overall, these were a quick and great read. I loved the action that took place even if it wasn't the focal point of the story for me. I'm interested in seeing where the next story is going to go especially based on how the third one ended. I'm excited to hear more from Murderbot's perspective. If you haven't picked up this series yet I highly recommend it!

Have you read this book? What was your favourite part?

Summary:
In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

I bought this book upon release in 2017 and then it collected dust on my Kobo shelf. In fact, I forgot I had even purchased it, but I got this through Audible Plus - Audible's new "download these for free" option. This and the sequel were "included" with my membership so I thought I would give it a go.

And I am so glad I did. The worldbuilding was amazing. I loved learning about how the magic worked, how the hunters went searching for storms, and everything about the way that all the magic worked together. I thought it was so well done, given to us at a good pace, and then expanded upon in a way that made sense to us as a reader while moving the plot along as well. That craft of world building is something that not a lot of people can accomplish, let alone do it well.

And I did like the characters as characters. I liked going between the different perspectives to see what was happening within each of the storylines, but I would have liked this to be a 5 person audiobook rather than just one. It made it difficult to always know whose perspective we were in because only one person was speaking.

I thought Aurora (Roar, Roara) was a really interesting main character and I do wish we spent more time in her perspective (it was probably about 60-75%). She is a princess who has to find her own way in the world because she's so afraid of being left behind or used in a way that she doesn't want. I wouldn't say she is naive, but she is sheltered and seeing her grow throughout the novel to be more of her own person was really great.

I do wish we had seen more of the storm hunters crew both before they left and during the hunts. We only really saw one "fight" with the storm and I would have liked more of that. That would have pushed this to be even more than what it was. But learning about witches, the old gods, and the way that everyone worked together to be able to tackle the storms was really interesting.

I hated all the romantic options and thought there was a lot of problematic aspects of the romance that was provided. There are a lot of reviews out there that go into detail about it but it is definitely toxic - a lot of non-consensual kissing, touching, etc. And both men see Aurora as something to be captured and/or conquered. But truthfully, the romance actually didn't feel like a big part to me. Maybe that's the pro of the audio format or maybe I was just too excited about the worldbuilding.

TLDR: I am glad I already have access to the next book but I do wish that the third one was already published (or at least had a release date). I got about 60% of the way through and tried to order book #3 but can't find it available. That's how I feel about this one.

Have you read this book? Are you going to pick up this or the sequel?

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and chose to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.

I feel like this is one of those books that is hard to not like but at the same time I wasn't over the moon about it? I liked the plot, the pacing, the way the story was told via flashbacks, but I wasn't a fan of the characters at all. I'm definitely in the minority even though I definitely enjoyed it because I don't think this is one that I would recommend to everyone like I do with some other books. It does make me more interested in reading MORE HAPPY THAN NOT because I liked the writing style and the overall storytelling which I hope will translate into every book that Silvera writes.

But there are some that I am even more excited about than others, so I contacted those authors and asked if I could interview them. Lucky me, they said yes. So I have a bunch of author interviews in November so that you guys can learn more about some super awesome sounding books and add them to your TBR!

Where do you like to write?

Nicole Castroman: I always write in my study. I have to have relative quiet and my home is the best place for that. I’m amazed when I hear authors write in coffee shops and things. I would get too easily distracted and people watch.

Why do you write for younger audiences?

Nicole Castroman: Why not? ☺ I think younger audiences are more open to different kinds of stories, and no topic is off limits. YA is known for being brave and taking risks.

Where do you like to write?

Heather Demetrios: I usually write in my office. I live in a tiny 2-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn and I’ve tricked out my office so that it’s filled with things that inspire me. And the walls are green! I also have corkboards up for every book I’m working on, with pictures and quotes and such that inspire me.

Why do you write for younger audiences?

Heather Demetrios: I had a tough time growing up. I came from a broken home and we were broke. Books were my escape. They were vitally important to my well-being and allowed me to dream big. I wanted to write for teens that need an escape, or that need to be seen, or that want to know more about the world and their place in it.

Describe BAD ROMANCE in 10 words or less.

Heather Demetrios: My raw, bloody, broken heart. True Fiction. Unflinching. Battle cry.

Interview with... Tricia Levenseller!

I'm sure you're all watching with great anticipation for my 2017 Anticipated Releases weekly posts in which I gush over books coming out next year that I'm excited about. But there are some that I am even more excited about than others, so I contacted those authors and asked if I could interview them. Lucky me, they said yes. So I have a bunch of author interviews in November so that you guys can learn more about some super awesome sounding books and add them to your TBR!

Without further ado, here is a fantastic interview with the lovely TRICIA LEVENSELLER, author of the forthcoming novel DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING!

DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING

Author: Tricia Levenseller

Series: N/A
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Publication Date: February 28, 2017

Summary:
A 17-year-old pirate captain intentionally allows herself to get captured by enemy pirates in this thrilling YA adventure.

If you want something done right . . .

When the ruthless pirate king learns of a legendary treasure map hidden on an enemy ship, his daughter, Alosa, knows there's only one pirate for the job—herself. Leaving behind her beloved ship and crew, Alosa deliberately facilitates her own kidnapping to ensure her passage on the ship, confident in her ability to overcome any obstacle. After all, who's going to suspect a seventeen-year-old girl locked in a cell? Then she meets the (surprisingly perceptive and unfairly attractive) first mate, Riden, who is charged with finding out all her secrets. Now it's down to a battle of wits and will . . . . Can Alosa find the map and escape before Riden figures out her plan?

Debut author Tricia Levenseller blends action, adventure, romance, and a little bit of magic into a thrilling YA pirate tale.
Purchase:

What is your writing routine?

Tricia Levenseller: First off, thanks so much for having me! I’m so excited to chat with you!

I’m not one of those authors who writes every day. I’m big on setting writing goals, and those usually change from book to book. For DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING’s sequel, I set a goal of writing 500 words, six days a week. Because that’s a fairly small and doable amount, I usually surpassed it. I’ll also put restrictions on myself. “No Netflix or Xbox until your writing is done.” For my current project, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo. My goal for this is to write 2,000 words, six days a week for the month of November.

Why do you write for younger audiences?

Tricia Levenseller: I think there’s so much power in writing about teens. Rowling could have had Dumbledore kill Voldemort. Coin could have killed Snow instead of Katniss. But don’t these stories mean so much more to us when we see younger characters taking out the bad guys? So many important decisions are made when we’re teens as we choose who we want to be and how we’ll behave. I think it’s fascinating writing about those problems while also trying to save the world.

Summary:
There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.

What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.
Purchase:

What is your writing routine?

Cale Dietrich: It varies quite a lot, so there’s no definite answer for this! It depends on so many things, like, how inspired I am, or what stage of the process I’m at. I’m currently doing NaNo, so I’m trying as hard as I can to stick to some sort of schedule of hitting 2000 words a day. But most of the time, I write when I feel like it, usually with coffee and or snacks.

Why do you write for younger audiences?

Cale Dietrich: Ohh good question! I’ve honestly never thought about why I write YA instead of adult or MG. I think I write YA because I love it so much. Seriously, pretty much all of my favourite books are YA books. Plus, I think there’s a lot of enthusiasm in YA and in the YA community, which I really love about it.

Describe THE LOVE INTEREST in 10 words or less.

Cale Dietrich: Two spies compete over girl, fall for each other instead.
