What is the best part about being an author?

Tara Sim: Interacting with the community, I think. I’ve made so many new, amazing friends since becoming an author. They’re the type of friends who really understand writing and books in a way my friends growing up never did. I also love the dedication and support of my readers!

Do you find it difficult to balance being an author with the other aspects in your life?

Tara Sim: Sometimes, yes. I work full time, and being an author is like having another full time job on top of that. I usually have to multitask at my day job by responding to author-y emails on my phone. When I have a deadline is when it gets craziest, and my social life completely dies, but when I’m not on deadline it’s a lot easier to take breaks and wind down.

What has been the best book you’ve read in the past six months?

Tara Sim: Oh man, I can’t pick just one. Here are some of my favorite reads of 2016 so far: A Gathering of Shadows, This Savage Song, And I Darken, A Court of Mist and Fury, The Raven King, The Reader, A Shadow Bright and Burning, and The Abyss Surrounds Us (although technically I read it last year but shh).

What do you hope readers take away from TIMEKEEPER?

Tara Sim: I hope it brings some sort of magic into their lives. I’ve already had readers telling me it’s cured their reading slumps, which is pretty awesome, or that it’s made them feel good in some way. I hope it shows readers that no matter how bleak the world is, you can still find magic/love where you least expect it.

There are a lot of subjects bobbling around the world of Girl in Pieces, my young adult debut novel: homelessness, adolescent depression, addiction, body image. When you craft a contemporary realistic novel, there’s a certain amount of research, or perhaps just investigation, that needs to be done in order to make the story and characters, well, believable. But you also have to remember that adolescents, just like adults, have flaws. And sometimes those flaws are what make a book believable.

3. Bring the Sensible Shoes

You will walk more than you ever thought you would. You WILL get blisters. Your feet will hate you. Functional trumps adorable cute in this case.

 This was a really good read. Allen-Vath can WRITE, that's for sure. And she does so in a way that not only feels realistic but tells the story in a way that you want to read it. I thought this was a story that NEEDED to be told, NEEDED to be heard, and, most importantly, NEEDS to be read by all. Especially those who feel as if they don't quite fit in or belong anywhere. Bree is a champion for every teenage girl who floats between social groups and is trying to do the right thing for herself while not hurting others in the process.
