Top Ten Tuesday (3): Top Ten Fairy Tales and Fairy Tale Retellings I Heart

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish. They'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and LOVE to see other top ten lists!

Ten Fairy Tales and Fairy Tale Retellings I Heart

I have a few of these actually but spoiler alert: Cinder is not one of them. I will mix them up whether it be the fairy tale or the retelling of the fairy tale. And since there are definitely more Cinderella retellings than any other, I am going to limit myself on how many of those I choose. Even though they are the ones I read the most. #sorrynotsorry

Fairy Tale Retellings
(1) The Ugly Stepsister by Aya Ling || Retelling of Cinderella
This was almost a 5/5 but the ending literally ruined it for me. I reviewed it and I talked about the ending on Twitter (without spoiling it). Because it was probably the best and most creative fairy tale retelling I have ever read and then I was so disappointed with the ending.

(2) The Land of Stories Series by Chris Colfer || Retelling of Multiple Fairy Tales
This series is really cute. I love the different stories all woven together to create a larger plot (see: Once Upon A Time). It brings together every fairy tale character and weaves them into a great adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed! I have only read the first one, but I am sure the rest of them are just as good -- if not better.

(3) A Curse of Ash and Iron by Christine Norris || Retelling of Cinderella
A steampunk Cinderella retelling!!! It was honestly one of my favourite books of June 2015 and I highly recommend it. Also this is me limiting my Cinderella choices to two.

(4) Omni (Omni #1) by Andrea Murray || Retelling of Helen of Troy
While not strictly a fairy tale retelling since the story of Helen of Troy isn't technically a fairy tale, I am still including it in this list. This was one of my favourite Greek Mythology retellings and I even participated in a blog tour of it!

(5) Spelled by Betsy Schow || Retelling of The Wizard of Oz + Others
Even though I got a little irritated at the book because of how it was written, overall it was still a really good retelling of the Wizard of Oz. There were elements in there that pushed it over the top of fun and there were some elements in there that made me grind my teeth; you can see my full review to see what I mean.

Fairy Tales
(6) Beauty and the Beast by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont
Read the original story and let me know what you think. I personally think it is one of my favourites. I have some issues with the Disney retelling, but I know of a couple book retellings that I have not read yet, but if you want to check them out, be my guest ;)
(7) The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christen Anderson
Read the original story and let me know what you think. My favourite adaptation of this is Disney movie The Emperor's New Groove. #sorrynotsorry

Read the original story and let me know what you think. I loved Tangled and I know that Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer is a retelling (ish) of this one!

Read the original story and let me know what you think. I was always a fan of the troll and not the goat, but hey. I never said I was normal. Reflective thinking: This is probably why I love the Trylle series so much. Huh.

Read the original story and let me know what you think. Okay so this is on this list because my dad literally told me this story every night before bed when I was growing up. He did fun voices and everything. So there's a Fun Fact About Me as well.

  1. I love it when multiple fairy tales come together like in The Lunar Chronicles and Once Upon A Time (one of my favourite shows!)
My post was a list of fairy tales that I would be interested in reading if they were retold , you can check it out here : http://rambling-reads.blogspot.ie/2015/08/fairy-tales-that-should-be-retold-top.html
    Happy Tuesday! X

    1. I love Once Upon A Time!!! *girly scream* I used to sit down and watch it all the time with my mum :) We were both crazy about it trying to guess which fairy tale each thing was from lol.

    2. I checked out your post and I loved it! I agree about the Arthurian stories and left you a series to check out :)

And yes, I love Once Upon A Time although I prefer the earlier seasons. I find that the newer stories are taking the same route as Lost did in the later seasons (which is a good comparison since it is the same creators) but I do love the mixing up of all the fairy tales!

  2. Good job at actually choosing 10 that no one else has. I think the Lunar Chronicles is on everyone's list this week, including mine haha. I really like the graphic you designed for this. :)

    1. Thanks Sarah! As much as I liked the Lunar Chronicles, I didn't *love* it so I felt it would be kind of fake to put on here, you know?

I also enjoy your graphic for TTT! It is so cute and cool!

  3. ooo great post!! I love the second half of the list! I love Repunzel and Beauty and the Beast! I still remember the Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Three Little Pigs! he he! I have to say though, I've only ever seen the movie of the Emperors New Clothes.
Omni sounds really interesting! I'm quite curious about Helen of Troy so it should make for a really good read!
    Have a great week,
    Amy x

    1. Thanks for commenting Amy! I tried to mix it up a bit with the second half. I saw a lot of people doing stories they wanted to be retold but I am okay with the originals.

  4. I loved three little pigs as a child. My Grandpa told this story the best! He also made funny voices and the best sounds while telling it. I loved that story. I really should buy a book one of those days just to have a little remembrance of that.
I am not a huge fan of the original versions of the Grim brothers Fairy tales. But maybe they are better in english. I should try that one day and see.
We have A Court of Thorns and Roses in common, but i will look up a few of the other books you mentioned in your list to see if i might enjoy reading them. So thank you for that. :)
    Fantastic list :)

    1. I'm so glad I'm not alone with my love of Three Little Pigs and having someone read it (say it?) aloud to me! Thanks for sharing that tidbit with me :)

    1. It was really good! One of the best Cinderella retellings I've read (that followed the storyline of Cinderella from start to finish). I would highly recommend it!
