NOT EVEN BONES
Author: Rebecca Schaeffer
Series: Not Even Bones #1
Source: ARC via Raincoast
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Publication Date: September 4, 2018
Rating: 4/5 stars
Summary:
Dexter meets This Savage Song in this dark fantasy about a girl who sells magical body parts on the black market — until she’s betrayed.
Nita doesn’t murder supernatural beings and sell their body parts on the internet—her mother does that. Nita just dissects the bodies after they’ve been “acquired.” But when her mom brings home a live specimen, Nita decides she wants out — dissecting living people is a step too far.
But when she tries to save her mother’s victim, she ends up sold on the black market in his place — because Nita herself is a supernatural being. Now Nita is on the other side of the bars, and there is no line she won’t cross to escape and make sure no one can ever capture her again.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and chose to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.
This was very very good. It started out very strong and remained very good throughout the majority of the book. I thought it did hit a bit of a wall at 60% but the pay off at the end was well worth the mudding through. However I didn’t realize it was the beginning of a series until the very end so I’m VERY disappointed I have to wait a long time to continue this journey!
NOT EVEN BONES is dark, morally grey, and enticing. It starts off with one of the most interesting opening sequences I've seen in a long time and has thrills all along the way. The characters are complex, have so much depth, and really well developed. I didn't root for ANY of the characters, but I mean, that's okay because they are all not the best. In a good way!
I like Nita and her story. I thought it was super cool to have this be about a black market monster system. I was really intrigued by all the mythology and history behind the monsters and their different classifications. I would like just a book on that. Give me a bestiary!!!
This is a super solid debut and I can't wait for everyone else to be able to read it on Tuesday! If you like characters who make questionable decisions, a lot of gore, and trying to do the right thing, but not always succeeding. This is the book for you!
Rebecca Schaeffer was born and raised in the Canadian prairies. Her itchy feet took her far from home when she turned eighteen, and she hasn't returned for more than a few months here or there since. She's allergic to stasis, loves travelling, and likes to pick up new languages. You can find her sitting in a cafe on the other side of the world, writing about villains, antiheroes and morally ambiguous characters.
