Summary:

The sequel to the ah-mazing SORCERER TO THE CROWN, THE TRUE QUEEN has magic, mayhem, and strong female characters that you root for the whole way through. I loved seeing the old characters, meeting new ones, and being introduced to more magic in this than we previously saw.

I’m going to start my review with a quick blurb about the story because when I first heard it, I was stunned and then immediately added it to my TBR, so I want to bring you all on the same page.

Ninth-grader Julie is dealing with pretty average teenage problems (in love with her best friend, you know how it is) but one day she finds her mom standing stock-still by the sink, hands resting in freezing dishwater, saying that her heart is gone. As Julie reels from this admission and her mom’s strange detachment in the coming weeks, she struggles to find a way to get her mom back to normal while keeping her condition secret from everyone else. But high school brings more drama, and Julie’s secrets are threatening to overwhelm her.

So weird and cool, right?

With the help of his BFF, Nettie, and some unlikely allies, Ezra rallies to create their small-town school’s first gay-straight alliance. The Rainbow Alliance Club is formed. But the changes don't come without hiccups, one of which being a messy scandal involving Alex and a gay hook-up app.

As Ezra and his friends attempt to sway their school into an alliance of tolerance and acceptance, Ezra experiences a few surprises of his own on the home-front. He also learns the hard way that friendships out of convenience aren't always a good idea, just as some enemies might not be as bad as he originally imagined them to be.
Purchase:
Pride Must Be a Place really took me by surprise, in all aspects of the saying. The plot twists were totally unexpected, and I found myself really taken by the story. I had also not read much Canadian contemporary, so it was nice to dive into something new!

There's something magical about middle grade books that just can't be found in any other book.  Maybe because it reminds me of simpler times or maybe it's just because there's something incredibly unique about a book told from  a child's perspective but whatever the reason is, I love Middle grade books. Especially middle grade contemporary. Though I don't frequently seek them out, whenever I do  it's like coming home.

I am generally very wary of books that are self-published, or published by houses that are so small they may as well be self-published. I tend to find the writing is lacking, the editing is atrocious, and the cover design does nothing to draw me in. When I was assigned Mercury Rises by Scarlett Kol for We Can(ada) Read 2018, I was hesitant. What if I hated it?

I was pleasantly surprised.

5 Novels Set in Space to Check Out

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

This is one of my favourite series by one of my favourite authors! This is another series that I find just gets better with each book. I absolutely love these fairy tale retellings and how each book tells the story of a different character but still effortlessly blends the other characters in.  It’s such a diverse cast of loveable characters with such amazing dynamics between them. 

The Fifth Wave Series by Rick Yancey

This book has had very mixed reviews since the movie came out a few years ago. Personally, I adored this entire series. Although it can be cheesy at times, it was extremely entertaining right from the beginning. The books are told in alternating perspectives between a cast of colourful characters from a 5-year-old boy, to various soldiers fighting the alien invasions, to an alien himself!
