Why You Love Your Cover
I love looking at book covers and I have to admit it’s hard for me NOT to judge a book by its cover. Authors anxiously await the first view of their covers, worrying the cover artist won’t capture the right feel for the book. I was therefore ecstatic when I saw my covers. They are perfect for the stories.Like most authors, I had another career before I become a full time writer. For several years I taught landscape design and also designed flower borders on the side. When you design with flowers, color is a big part of the process.
When I wanted to make a very bold garden, I often combined blue and orange flowers. In traditional color theory, these two colors together are complementary, meaning they are opposite each other on the color wheel, and create a striking contrast when used together. I was so pleased to see the colors used on both STATION FOSAAN and REYET TRAP.
I also love that both Quinn and Mira are pictured. While Quinn is the one telling the story, there wouldn’t be a story at all without Mira, and it’s the relationship between the two that drives some of their choices.
I give major kudos to the cover designer, because while the books are science fiction, they take place mostly on other planets, not in space. I love that the covers have a bit of an otherworldly feel, because they fit the stories perfectly. One of my goals in writing stories is to have readers want to visit the worlds I create, and these covers are a perfect complement to that goal.
Dee Garretson writes for many different age groups, from chapter books to middle grade to young adult to adult fiction. She lives in Ohio with her family, and in true writer fashion, has cat companions who oversee her daily word count. When she’s not writing, she loves to travel, watch old movies, and attempt various kinds of drawing, painting and other artistic pursuits.
