Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process. Funny, smart, and true-to-life, FIRSTS is a one-of-a-kind young adult novel about growing up.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I went into this one knowing I was going to love it and I was not disappointed. This is the type of contemporary story I love: one that is gritty and raw and leaves you feeling something after you finish. If you are a fan of Sarah Dessen or Gayle Foreman, you're going to love this book.

Without giving too much away from the plot, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it played out in a perfect way and had the right amount of build up to fallout. I think Laurie did an excellent job in writing this storyline and I think in anyone else's hands,  it would have been a disaster. Because it was so raw and so real and every time there was a new guy, I felt so bad for Mercedes because she didn't realuze this wasn't the answer for her happiness.

And that's what this book is about: Mercedes is trying to find happiness after getting fucked over (literally). We've all been there in some shape or form so I will not tolerate someone saying "Couldn't relate cause I'm still a virgin". Even if you've never had sex you can relate to Mercedes and her struggles. No one's life is perfect and we all have varying degrees of problems, especially with how we eat, how we think about ourselves, and how we handle relationships with others. You don't need to sleep with someone to understand that Mervedes is trying to fill a gap, a void, a hole in her heart in the way she thinks is best.

I loved Mercedes too. She did what she thought was best and while she was upset about what people said about her at the end, she never once slutshammed herself. She mentioned being a slut in passing about how her mom was chill with that, but she never talked about how she was a slut, a whore, etc. because sex empowered her and I LOVED that. We need more of that in YA books.

Mercedes is a mirror for everyone: you can see yourself in her and not just the bad parts but the good ones too. She worked hard to get good grades, she focused on school, she kept a couple close friends because that's what mattered, and as much as she was selfish in her sex acts, she was pretty selfless in the rest of her life. She made mistakes, but who is perfect? It was a relief that she could fuck up and understand that and deal with the consequences. She was such a strong character.

I liked Faye. She was a little too much at some points but she was genuine. A good friend and had such an interesting back story. I would have liked maybe a bit more definitive declaration that she was bisexual because I was left assuming that rather than really knowing it. Zach was good too, almost too good, and I secretly wish he had been a little bit more of an ass but I grew to love him during the book. Angela was my second favourite character though. Because we've been there: you have two people telling you two different things and aren't sure of which one to believe. I think she had a good story arc and I would like more of her. I thought Mercedes had a dynamic relationship with her mom. I liked the transition over the course of the novel to what their relationship became.

I highly recommend this book but you need to read it and remember that there is more to it than just sex. Don't get caught up in that because then you'll miss the bigger picture. Mercedes is one of the best YA contemporary heroines I've read in a long time and I'm so grateful I got to meet her. I can't wait for you guys to meet her too.

Summary:
“I love you,” Polly says suddenly when I’m almost to the door.
“I know.” I say.

Hermione Winters has been a flyer. She’s been captain of her cheerleading team. The envied girlfriend and the undisputed queen of her school. Now it’s her last year and those days and those labels are fading fast. In a few months she’ll be a different person. She thinks she’s ready for whatever comes next.

But then someone puts something in her drink at a party, and in an instant she finds herself wearing new labels m ones she never imagined:

Victim. Survivor. That raped girl.

Even though this was never the future she imagined, one essential thing remains unchanged: Hermione can still call herself Polly Oliver’s best friend, and that may be the truest label of all.

Heartbreaking and empowering, Exit, Pursued by a Bear is the story of transcendent friendship in the face of trauma.

“I love you,” I say, because I really, really do.
“I know,” says Polly.

"Today, everything is ours if we want it."
"Yes," I tell her. "It is."
Warning: This book deals with rape. In a VERY EXCELLENT WAY, but it is still there. So please be careful if you are triggered by this before reading this book and my review.

Man, this was a tough read. It was a one chapter at a time one because I had to emotionally prepare myself for what could potentially come next. Because even though this was handled so so so perfectly, it was still so so so hard to read about. I loved how sensitive to the topic this was but also how honest it was as well.

I loved that instead of spiraling out of control, Hermione took control of her life in a different way. I enjoyed seeing how she coped with the aftermath because everyone is different but that doesn't mean anyone's reactions are less valid than any other. And I think that even though she put on a brave face, she was still able to acknowledge that she was different -- and not by her choice. She was so strong and fierce, especially when given tough choices and having to make very adult decisions at 17. She never let this get in her way though, and instead of being victim or taking the labels that people gave her, Hermione made one of her own for herself.

I also really liked the positive portrayal of therapy in this one. I liked that Hermione acknowledges that she trusts her therapist wholeheartedly. Because she takes his advice, knows she can contact him when she's having problems, and still wants to reach out to him. I liked that instead of the typical portrayals of therapy, we got one that is what really, truly happens. I think that Hermione's character and her ability to open up was part of the reason that it worked so well, but it was nice to see a character who was so adamant about having a therapist that would work for their problems in a YA novel. It was also so great to see real panic attacks, PTSD, and dissociation shown in this novel as well. Not everyone experiences these things in the same way, but having Hermione explain her feelings and her thoughts made it so easy to relate to her -- even if you haven't been in the same situation.

I loved Hermione's relationship with everyone around her, especially Polly. I loved their friendship and how they were both willing to go the extra mile for one another. I liked that this event was looked at through the lens of how it affected everyone in Hermione's life, but that she made a point of saying that she shouldn't have to hide her feelings just to make someone else feel better. And I loved that she didn't want to be the reason for someone to have some "character growth" to become a better person: she wanted people to treat her the same as everyone else.

Mostly what EXIT, PURSUED BY A BEAR gives you is another Hermione that all young girls can relate to: smart, tough, and having to make hard decisions but doing them anyway and being the better person for it.

Summary:
Everyone knows the legends about the cursed girl--Isabel, the one the señoras whisper about. They say she has green skin and grass for hair, and she feeds on the poisonous plants that fill her family’s Caribbean island garden. Some say she can grant wishes; some say her touch can kill.

Seventeen-year-old Lucas lives on the mainland most of the year but spends summers with his hotel-developer father in Puerto Rico. He’s grown up hearing stories about the cursed girl, and he wants to believe in Isabel and her magic. When letters from Isabel begin mysteriously appearing in his room the same day his new girlfriend disappears, Lucas turns to Isabel for answers--and finds himself lured into her strange and enchanted world. But time is running out for the girl filled with poison, and the more entangled Lucas becomes with Isabel, the less certain he is of escaping with his own life.

I was a little underwhelmed by this one but it was still a good book. I guess I thought from the description that there would be a bit more magic and a little less introspection. It was almost as if the book couldn't decide if it wanted to fully be magical realism or not. I think I was anticipating more magic or at least have it be integrated into the world a bit more. I thought that there just wasn't enough. But let's break it down.

What Worked:
Lucas fully acknowledging he had a hero/saviour complex -- and allowing someone to call him out on it without getting too mad. I thought that Lucas was actually a really well written character and that it was refreshing to have a male protagonist in this story. I thought he was critical enough of Isabel while still realizing that she did some horrible things.

Isabel -- to an extent. I liked that she wanted to make her own destiny and that she collected all the wishes. I liked that she wanted to get better but not to the extent that her father wanted. I also kind of liked that she passed on her wish collecting to Lucas in a sense.

What Didn't:
The plot was ehhh. I think the problem was this was your typical contemporary mystery with some "magic" sprinkled in. But there wasn't enough of either element to make it pop to me. I didn't think the tension was high enough for Lucas to really be worried about getting charged with the murders and I think it was pretty obvious from the get-go who was even committing the crime. I also felt like the magic aspects were thrown in once the  "rest" of the plot was created. But it just didn't balance for me.

Isabel literally wanted someone dead because the girl liked Lucas. Come on, can't we have something different for once. *sighs*

Overall this is a decent book and there are some interesting aspects to it, but I would recommend checking it out at the library first before buying it.

Summary:
After a disastrous, reputation-destroying party at the end of junior year, Kat Henley has a new plan. When it comes to boys—especially other people’s boys:

Don’t touch.
Don’t smile.
Don’t charm.

In the past, drawing attention to herself helped distract people from what really makes Kat different—having two gay parents. But it’s also cost her friendships. Kat can’t afford to lose any more of those, especially not her cousin, Harper. They’re spending one last summer together at the lake, where they run into an intriguing newcomer named Emmett Reese. After years of trying to prove she’s just like everybody else, Kat has found someone who wants her because she’s not. A boy who could be everything she wants too—if Harper hadn’t liked him first…

I fell head over heels with Phillips' writing when I read FAKING PERFECT so when I saw she had another book coming out, I knew I just had to read it. And I'm so glad I did because ANY OTHER GIRL was so good. It was the perfect summer romance novel and I loved every second of my reading of it.

I think the best part of it was that even though it was clearly a romance novel, there were so many other layers to it with Kat worrying she was too much for other people and trying to bring attention to herself rather than those around her. I think it was written so well because I felt Kat taking the weight of the world on her shoulders so that the people she loved didn't have to.

I also really liked that even though Kat wasn't necessarily in the wrong (at least, in my opinion), she still owned up to her mistakes and apologized. And there was such emphasis on forgiveness in this one, whether you are forgiving a friend, a loved one, or just yourself which was beautiful. It was really well done, especially because while Kat didn't see the error of her ways because she had her perspective of things, she tried to look outside of her perspective to see how other people were affected by her choices and actions and see how they would feel. And I don't think that is highlighted enough in fiction (or reality, tbh) but needs to be. Because even if we are worried about ourselves and our actions, we need to realize that other people will have different reactions to what we say or do because of their experiences and opinions.

I think one of the best things that Phillips does is to make contemporary feel so realistic and write characters that everyone can relate too, even if they have their own quirks. And just like with FAKING PERFECT, our heroine wasn't exactly the perfect girl, but she owned her imperfections and they made her who she was. And I loved that. I liked that she wasn't so caught up on what she wasn't the best at but actively worked to be better every day. I highly recommend this one to everyone.
