I picked this one up on a whim from the comic book store because I had heard such good things about it. Now I'm kicking myself for not having picked it up way back in 2012. It is literally SO GOOD.
One of the best parts is the art. It is always super helpful when you get to see the world that is being described but Fiona Staples does an immaculate job with all the art. It is absolutely beautiful. When I open up the comic I feel like I have been transported to the actual world and am sitting in the background watching the events unfold.
The world building is immaculate and for the short time we are engrossed in the world we learn a lot without it feeling like an infodump. I think there is definitely room to grow the world but for the space that is given in each panel, the world building is so incredible. I love the different languages, the different cultures we have seen, and the different planets. We are thrown right into the action from the first panel and it is just so easy to fall into the story and piece together what is happening and why. It is seamlessly integrated and doesn't feel as though you are missing too much information to understand what is happening.
I like that it is narrated by Hazel (who is just a baby) because we know eventually we will catch up to the point where she is narrating this story. I think she has a cool voice and I love how her words are in a different font. Actually, that is one thing I really enjoy about all of it. There are different colours and fonts used for all the varying speech. It is incredible.
Overall: 4/5 stars. It was really well done but there was still something *missing* for me to give it 5 stars. I can't tell you what it is but I would have known it if I read it.
Great review! I picked this one up this month and am so excited to read it! I'm glad to hear that it was worth it :)
