Goodreads Synopsis
When Wendy Everly first discovers the truth about herself—that she’s a changeling switched at birth—she knows her life will never be the same. Now she’s about to learn that there’s more to the story...
She shares a closer connection to her Vittra rivals than she ever imagined—and they’ll stop at nothing to lure her to their side. With the threat of war looming, her only hope of saving the Trylle is to master her magical powers—and marry an equally powerful royal. But that means walking away from Finn, her handsome bodyguard who’s strictly off limits... and Loki, a Vittra prince with whom she shares a growing attraction.
Torn between her heart and her people, between love and duty, Wendy must decide her fate. If she makes the wrong choice, she could lose everything, and everybody, she’s ever wanted... in both worlds.
Disclaimer: This is one of my favourite series of all time. I am extremely biased and my review will definitely show that.
This book picks up right where Switched leaves us with Wendy in this brand new world she is trying to fit into since she is the princess of a race of trolls, the Trylle. This sequel doesn't suffer from second book syndrome as so many sequels do as there are new introductions, a lot more world building, and a lot of twists along the way to keep you interested right up until the very end. And we get Loki.
The characters in this one are still great -- and we get introduced to a lot more of them as well. Where Finn was sweet, dutiful, and selfless, Loki is his opposite. Yes, we get the whole love triangle of opposites: do you want the dependable one or the bad boy? But it really works in this one because Loki isn't depicted as an abusive asshole, he is just as selfless as Finn in his own way. Also there isn't an overabundance of romance that the overarching plot becomes a side plot and the romance takes the lead.
I think the male characters in this one are all so different and play off one another very well. I would have liked to be introduced to more female characters throughout the entire series rather than males, but I do really enjoy Willa and Wendy. I think Wendy has really grown from the naive, selfish girl in the first novel into someone who will do everything she must to protect not only herself, but those she really cares about.
I liked that we learned about the politics in play between the different races of trolls, especially the distrust and hatred between the Trylle and the Vittra. But I loved that there was more to the story than what we were originally told by the Trylle -- and that the Vittra weren't extremely honest with Wendy either. It made it so that Wendy was able to come to her own conclusions and make the appropriate decisions based on what she wanted to achieve in her life. After a quick paced action scene at the beginning, there isn't a whole lot of action in the majority of this book, but the plot development and explanation of the way the different races interact made it worth every second. Even without the "action," there was still enough throughout the book to keep you turning pages until the very end.
ALSO, the version I have published by St. Martin Griffin's has bonus stories at the back and it puts you into three different points of view of the male characters in the story!! I highly suggest if you are going to pick up a copy, you pick this version up!
