Nothing But Shadows (Tales from Shadowhunter Academy #4) by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan
Goodreads Synopsis
Simon challenges the setup of the Shadowhunter Academy and in doing so learns the story of James Herondale and Matthew Fairchild and the unusual way that they became friends and parabatai.
You know how everyone wants J.K. to write stories about Harry's kids? That's what this story really is. Tessa and Will's child James attends Shadowhunter Academy and learns the truth about him and his unusual talents. He is just like Simon because he too lived in the dungeon and had something different about him.
Honestly, as much as I loved learning about James and his antics, I just am starting to enjoy these stories less and less. I think they are almost trying too hard and as much as I love the expansion on the history of the Shadowhunter world, I don't know if I like it through the eyes of characters we already have caught a glimpse of or through a semi-not-Simon Simon. I would much prefer just having the next series than these.
Overall: 3/5 stars. I liked James but I wanted something more or different.
