Summary:
People lived because she killed.
People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.

Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, We Hunt the Flame is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.

This was SO good. I loved every second of it and am highly anticipating the sequel that will be coming out this year! I am on my way to preorder it right now!!! If you like enemies to lovers, characters learning to accept their flaws, and a fresh take on fantasy, this is definitely the book for you!

WE HUNT THE FLAME was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019, so I was super excited when it was an Indigo Book Box! I was so thrilled that I got a lot of extra perks (like candles and bookmarks) as part of the reading experience for this one. But as is the typical in my life, it wasn't until I got the audiobook that I was able to actually take the time to listen.

The writing is absolutely exquisite and I found myself fully immersed in the world. I was able to picture everything around me and felt as though I was right there alongside the characters as they were traversing along and finding the darkness. I liked both of the perspectives: Zafira, the Huntress and Nasir, the Assassin. I knew from the first second we met both of them that I would enjoy their banter and watching them fall in love.

The first little bit is hard to get into: it is a lot of world building and demonstrating what the world is currently like, but I loved it. When you take this into perspective with the last third of the book (which moves very fast!!!), it seems like a weird juxtaposition for a book, even a first novel. But that didn't detract from my reading experience.

I loved watching the characters come into themselves and also grow together to understand different perspectives. I also really enjoyed watching them fall for each other and realize what that actually meant.

If you haven't already read this, WE HUNT THE FLAME should be at the top of your to be read pile for 2020, especially before the sequel hits shelves later this year!

Have you read this one? What was your favourite part?

  1. This is great to hear! I've started this book a few times but haven't made it past the first couple chapters. I'm glad to see it gets way more interesting after the initial info dump! Great review!
