Summary:
Foster Stewart knows she's different. Her life has never been "normal." Talking to plants and controlling cloud formations aren't things most seventeen year olds are into. Tate "Nighthawk" Taylor is perfect. Star quarterback and all around dreamy boy next door he never thought about his "extra" abilities. What quarterback wouldn't want night vision? That's not weird, right? It's cool!
But on the night of their first meeting a deadly tornado brings them together and awakens their true abilities - the power to control the element air. Unbeknown to Tate and Foster, they are the first in a group of teens that were genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements. Which truly sucks for Foster, as she has to face the fact that Dr. Rick Stewart, her beloved scientist father, betrayed her and now wants to use her and the others for his own nefarious world domination plot.
Foster and Tate must stop Dr. Stewart and his minions before he destroys their lives and the world.

I went into this book a little hesitant because it sounds a lot like a couple other books I've read (and enjoyed), so I was worried about the comparison. However, I was blown away (wind joke) by how much I really loved this one! The black and white pictures mixed with the prose made this a really cool and unique read.
I really liked that we are dropped in this story without much backstory - and that when we get that backstory, it isn't quite an info dump. I really liked the interjection of comic panels into the story (however, I was not a fan of the art style, but that is a personal preference). I thought it was a good homage to superheroes and comics in general. There was so much to this that I really liked - different aspects that really stood out to me and made me really like this.
I did think the ending was a little cheesy, but it was a nice way to end this story that has a lot of death and dying. I am excited to see what comes next and get to know Charlotte and Bastien more. I hope the next book features them much more heavily because they seem much more interesting and nuanced than Foster and Tate.
I'd like to see some trans readers discuss Charlotte's character in a bit more detail. There is a lot of dead naming in this and probably more explanation of transitioning than would normally feel comfortable. I took it as "people who read Cast books may not be 100% aware of transgender issues so this is their introduction" but I am cis and therefore my opinion does not matter as much as a trans reader.
I've seen a lot of people say that the characters are unlikeable but take that with a grain of salt. Our two main characters are teenagers - barely out of high school, finding out they have superpowers, losing their parents in a tragic and traumatic battle (!!!!) and spending time in a small place together. It would make anyone a little stir crazy and act in a manner that may not make you extremely proud. Also, all those people would have disliked me as a teenager.
If you are looking for something that feels similar to other books you've read, but has a bit more diversity (with the caveat that the main point of views are white with side characters and minor point of views being the diverse ones), this is the book for you. I can't wait to see where this story goes next!
