Hotshot pilot Vesper, an ambitious Tridian citizen, dreams of becoming a captain - but when she loses her spot to a brilliant, wisecracking boy from the wrong side of the asteroid belt, it makes her question everything she thought she knew. Growing up on the toxic planet Deva, Cormak will take any chance he can get to escape his dead-end life and join the Academy - even if he has to steal someone's identity to do it. Arran was always considered an outsider on icy Chetire, always dreaming of something more than a life working in the mines. Now an incoming cadet, Arran is looking for a place to belong - he just never thought that place would be in the arms of a Tridian boy. And Orelia is hiding a dark secret - she's infiltrated the Academy to complete a mission, one that threatens the security of everyone there. But if anyone finds out who she really is, it'll be her life on the line.

These cadets will have to put their differences aside and become a team to defend their world from a cunning enemy - but the danger might be lurking closer to home than they think...

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book via Indigo Teen and chose to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.

This was such a good intro to this series! It has a hefty  cliffhanger ending though that left me wanting more immediately. I would have liked more of the training in this one, actually. But I really really liked it.

I liked the multiple POVs and connected to some characters more than others, but thought each felt like an individual character. I could tell what each of the characters wanted, needed, and what pushed them to move forward. I especially liked seeing how the characters learned to trust one another throughout the training. I thought it was a good "found family" and exposition in learning how to be yourself in a new location.

I did enjoy that each of the characters were diverse (As seen on the cover), but they didn't necessarily feel any different than White. Yes, there were some aspects of the book and the characters that made them diverse. But they felt like white people written as diverse characters.

All this being said, I really enjoyed the training sequences and wished there was a lot more to it than what we got. The conflict in this was incredible and I can't wait to see how it plays out in the next novel. I am so grateful I got to read this one and think Kass Morgan has a good grasp on YA SciFi!

  1. The found family feature sounds neat! I haven't actually read anything by Kass Morgan since picking up The 100, really liking it, and then just... not continuing with the series, but this one might be interesting to pick up. (Sounds like she really likes cliffhangers, though I remember The 100 ending on a pretty significant one as well...)
