Summary:
In this young adult novel by award-winning author Anna-Marie McLemore, two non-binary teens are pulled into a magical world under a lake - but can they keep their worlds above water intact?

Everyone who lives near the lake knows the stories about the world underneath it, an ethereal landscape rumored to be half-air, half-water. But Bastián Silvano and Lore Garcia are the only ones who’ve been there. Bastián grew up both above the lake and in the otherworldly space beneath it. Lore’s only seen the world under the lake once, but that one encounter changed their life and their fate.

Then the lines between air and water begin to blur. The world under the lake drifts above the surface. If Bastián and Lore don’t want it bringing their secrets to the surface with it, they have to stop it, and to do that, they have to work together. There’s just one problem: Bastián and Lore haven’t spoken in seven years, and working together means trusting each other with the very things they’re trying to hide.

LAKELORE follows two non-binary, trans, neurodivergent, Mexican teens as they discovers a magical world under a lake. Everyone who lives near the lake knows the stories about the world underneath it, an ethereal landscape rumored to be half-air, half-water. Then again, they also believe it all to be just a myth. But Bastián Silvano and Lore Garcia has seen that world, they are the only ones who have been there. If Bastián and Lore don’t want it bringing their secrets to the surface with it, they have to stop it, and to do that, they have to work together. Now, can they trust each other with the very things they are trying to hide?

Anna-Marie McLemore's books are immersive and emotional in a way that they will fill you up with all those feelings that you never knew you could feel. They are vulnerable and astonishingly beautiful works of art. LAKELORE is no exception to the pattern. It's so achingly exquisite and written with such tenderness that I just want to passage through these pages and take residence under the waters of the said Lake.

But I know magical realism isn't for everyone and some of the metaphors and prose may not hit the same for everyone. I also know that McLemore does a fantastic job bringing the magical to the realism in a way that makes sense, but might not be enough for someone who wants it to be more fantasy.

Through alternating first-person points of view, this book explores gender transitioning and genderfluidity with brilliant precision. Anna tells us a story of two teenagers whose lives should have been simple but the journey they overtake was anything but easy. Just because somethings seems easy to your eyes doesn't mean it'll be the same for everyone. The author does their best to create aware about so many important matters.

LAKELORE is a thought provoking, tears-jerking, soul-crushing, poignant and emotionally impactful book. It will break your heart in thousand pieces and then stitch them together again. Yet scars would remain and with those scars this book will stay with you in years to come. But thinking about this book wouldn't only remind you of those scars but also fill your heart with an astounding sense of hope and love.

Summary:
For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She’s found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger.

On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world’s most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book—with Brock McNight, the industry’s hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn’t buy what romance novels are selling—not after her own dreams were tragically cut short—and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her.

As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more.

If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan’s uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator—who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident—and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel.

Once an actress, Sewanne Chester's career took a turn when an accident altered her appearance. She used to be a popular romance narrator, but after deciding there's no such thing as Happily Ever After, she's sticking to fiction. But when Sewanne is offered a deal of a lifetime, and is paired with Brock McKnight for one last romance novel, she'll have to decide if there really is a Happily Ever After.

Such a cute and fun romance novel, I loved everything about this! As an audiobook connoisseur, I know when someone is a good narrator and Julia Whelan is a GREAT narrator. This was a love letter to audiophiles, the industry, and all things Happily Ever After. I thought it was well written, had good stakes, and some pretty good tropes throughout. It's also my first five star read of the year!

Sewanne is such a good character and goes through so much growth throughout the entire novel. I loved being in her head and seeing how she came to terms with being who she is. The remainder of the cast was amazing and they all had such great character chemistry between them.

Using her talents as an audiobook narrator, Sewanee is now focused on supporting her grandmother's transition into assisted living. Their relationship, although heartbreaking to read at times, was so touching. And funny! BlahBlah was a spitfire. I adored her life messages.

But the romance!!! It was so good!!! I loved it so much. It was such an emotional journey for both of them. They had good banter, but also genuine feelings and a solid connection between them.

Definitely read this as an audio - you won't want to miss that experience!

I really enjoyed this one. It took a bit to get used to the writing since it's basically a novel of someone telling you a story about yourself that you should know from their perspective but it was really good once you did get used to it. I found myself quite enjoying it and unable to put it down. I was reading in the bath and ended up refilling my water a couple times instead of getting out so I could continue reading.

Summary:

Oh. My. God.

Rain Johnson escaped the insanity of her radical environmentalist family, only to end up waitressing for a living. Her scale of success—with her at the bottom—only goes as high as that college degree she never got, until she gets one hell of an epiphany from a Trinity Corporation public-relations guy who calls himself Jude. He tells her she’s the Lamb of God, and it’s time for that whole Second Coming thing. But when her first minor miracle gets her arrested and an ecoterrorist using the name Messiah starts blowing up pesticide plants, Rain and Judas are in for way more apocalypse than either of them expected.

Jude scrambles to save his personal plan for salvation, but Lucy, the devil herself, has her own well-laid plans. It doesn’t matter that Rain’s a conflict-avoiding lesbian and Jude is history’s worst traitor. They’re all that stands between humanity and an end of the world that wasn’t supposed to happen.

"You people would give Lucifer’s hordes a run for their money. You all hate each other and come up with new reasons every day to stoke that fire."
I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this one. I'm not always a fan of books that deal with religion because they come across as too preachy, but this one had such a good blend of snark and sarcasm that it was hard not to enjoy it. I liked that there was obviously more at play than what both Rain and Jude knew, but I would have liked just a teensy bit more for it to be fully developed.
