I read the first two books in this series over the course of two days, basically. My actual reading time was probably 4 hours total. Because I was so in love with the concept and the writing and the characters that I couldn't put it down. This is shaping up to be one of my new favourite alien invasion stories and I cannot wait to see where the next book goes!
FIRE IN THE WOODS
I thought this was a really good example of the dialogue feeling like an actual teenager. As well, I just fully believed the plot of FIRE IN THE WOODS because I too would run away with a hot alien to find other aliens no matter what. One of my complaints about this one was that Jess censored herself from swearing, even in her head, which I thought was a bit too much. I think she definitely would have censored what she said aloud, especially around her military father, but I do not think she would have censored her thoughts.
I thought there was a good amount of action, but I think it should have and could have happened sooner rather than Jess having David stay in her house twice and try to cook and all the other mundane activities that took place. Considering there was instalove, there was enough time from when Jess first met David to the second time she meets him for her to be fully convinced to follow him wherever.
I liked Jess' relationship with her father. I think it was an accurate portrayal of a father-daughter relationship. I also just really liked her dad? I bet he is a silver fox.
I would have liked more time to be spent on the ending. I think there was enough urgency in the end but not enough resolution. I would have liked a bit more of a solidified ending; there wasn't enough of a clear picture of what was going to happen next from the ending in my opinion. I do highly recommend this one. Start this series now.
ASHES IN THE SKY
I really like this one, I think it's a great series. But I would have liked a bit more urgency at the end. I mean, there is literally an evil alien trying to destroy everything and all they are concerned about is tacos. I mean, I get the need for normalcy and all that jazz but .. maybe tell someone? Idk.
I think Jess really grew in this one. She obviously couldn't do *everything* because she was human, but I think she handled things pretty well. I also liked that she did some things that the aliens and other humans couldn't do! That was awesome! I also liked that she understood that she couldn't do everything! I think it was great that she started to realize that there were consequences to her actions and that it was important to understand the why behind them. I think it was great that her and David tried to figure out ways to be together even though they both knew it was futile.
David was much better in this book. I thought he had a lot more depth and dimension to him since he was in his natural element.

During infrequent excursions to her home planet of Earth, Jennifer enjoys long hikes in the woods, bicycling, swimming, snorkeling, and snuggling up by the fire with a great book; but great adventures are always a short shuttle ride away.
