Red Nights by Shari J. Ryan
Red Nights by Shari J. Ryan
Goodreads Synopsis
I'm Felicity Stone, a twenty-five-year-old with my whole life ahead of me. Well, until recently.
I didn't do it. Why would they think I did? Why would I want my twin brother dead? Why is everyone looking at me like I'm a criminal?
Well, everyone except him... Hayes Peyton, the charmingly beautiful stranger I met in the park at midnight; a totally legitimate place to meet the man of my dreams. Plus, he knows I'm innocent.
Believing him is easy. So very easy. Maybe too easy?
But when you hear things like: 'All good is laced with some bad, and everything you think is the truth, is nothing more than a blatant lie,' it makes you question reality.
In Shari J. Ryan's latest Romantic Suspense, Red Nights, you wonder how dark your world can get before all you see is red.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Red Nights started off as one of those books I thought I wasn't going to like and then I ended up thoroughly enjoying myself. My only complaint was that the ending was a little rushed. I think I enjoyed it so much because it kept me guessing right up until the end. The beginning of the novel had so much heartbreak that I was actually crying in my car while I was reading because I could actually feel losing my brother the way that Felicity did. Shari J. Ryan really knows how to write the heartbreak. I did really like Hayes but he wasn't enough for me to be completely compelled by him alone. I think Felicity really held her own as the protagonist and the romantic part of the plot was just an added bonus. I loved seeing the safe sex and consent being a turn on in this one because that is something I wholeheartedly believe in. And the sex scenes were so good. You felt like you were in the moment with them! Onto the plot though...
Every time I thought I figured something out, Felicity was also led in the same direction, which immediately made me realize that I had been duped. Which is why I immediately ruled out the killer at about 40% of the novel. I was like (to myself) "nah that is wayyy too obvious considering how obvious everything else has been and all these things have been dismissed." But it was still very good. I thought the trial and overall ending was rushed. I would have liked more of an expansion on the investigation into both cases that were present in the novel and even more of an explanation of that finale!!
I had a love/hate relationship with the idea of the "red nights" up until the very last scene. It was poetic and I understood it more once we reached the conclusion. Also CREEPY EPILOGUE. I almost am secretly wishing for a sequel where the killer somehow escapes from jail and they have to track them down, but also am not wishing for a sequel because the killer is creepy af.
Overall: 3.5/5 stars! Really enjoyed this one and it had me on the edge of my seat...for all aspects of it. Oh gosh, I'm turning into a pervert.
