Dragon Ball Z: Captain Ginyu Saga by Akira Toriyama
This review covers chapters 78-96 (Volumes 7 and 8) of the Dragon Ball Z manga; alternatively it covers volumes 23 and 24 of the Dragon Ball manga.
Goodreads Synopsis
All major action in the Captain Ginyu Saga takes place on the planet Namek. The saga deals mainly with the fight between Goku, Gohan and Krillin against Captain Ginyu.
The reinforcements Freeza called for have arrived in the form of the Ginyu Force: five warriors who are all supposedly the equal of Vegeta! They’re essentially there to act as a way for Goku and co. to fight together as a team before facing Freeza. Goku is (still) on the brink of appearing on Namek and both Kuririn and Gohan levelled up thanks to the Grand Elder of Namek.
In the previous saga, you are rooting for Vegeta in some of the fights, despite his evilness! The enemy of my enemy is my friend, as they say. Just when all hope seems to have been lost as Vegeta, Kuririn and Son Gohan are getting smacked about by Reacoom, one of the Ginyu Force, Freeza’s elite guard, the Capsule spaceship lands and out steps Goku.

Goku has become such a badass thanks to his heavy-g training on the way to Namek to the point that he deals with most of the Ginyu Force without breaking a sweat. The fight with Captain Ginyu was a tad comical -- after all this waiting for Goku and then this happens?!
Freeza’s got all of the Dragon Balls but he doesn’t know how to activate them so he’s trying to bully the Great Elder into telling him, though if the Great Elder dies, then the Dragon Balls become useless anyway. The label “super-Saiyan” gets mentioned again as well, this time to Goku himself who also doesn’t know what that is.
This saga has fantastic writing and art from Toriyama as usual. Goku brings the awesomeness and then just as quickly Toriyama flips the whole scenario around. Filled with inspired storytelling, the Captain Ginyu Saga has lots of excitement and martial arts fun, which is what I have come to expect of the Dragon Ball mangas!
Overall: 3/5 for this saga! I am glad Goku is back around but there are some cheap ploys and I want to get off Namek.
