After the whole plagiarism thing came out, I thought I'd read the original source of the poem in question. I wanted to make sure I was giving money to the content creator who actually deserved it. And I am SO glad I did. This poetry collection is incredible, but definitely not for the faint of heart.
One of my reading goals this year is to read more poetry collections because I feel like I need more of the real soul repairing that can only come from poetry. This collection has that and so much more. I loved that McKibbens isn't afraid to get into what it truly means to be broken and whole. I also love that this collection is a little shorter because I'm not sure I could have truly handled a much longer one.
I think this one will be hard for a lot of people to read, relate to, and truly enjoy because of how realistic McKibbens is - unless you have dealt with a lot of the issues she has in her life. From my life experiences I have noticed that people have a hard time truly hearing when people are speaking - especially if they haven't had a similar experience. They aren't able to understand, so they don't even bother to try. With that in mind, keeping an open mind while reading blud will serve anyone well.
McKibbens' poetry collection broke and repaired my soul. She understands mental health and illness are two sides of the same coin. I think there are so many amazing and poignant poems in this that I absolutely love. If you're are a fan of dark and gritty poems that highlight reality as it is not as you wish it was, this is the collection for you.
